Setting goals for your business, breaking them down and being super focused about how you spend your time each day is essential for creating a business with a consistent stream of clients. “But it’s so hard to do!” I know, I know...I hear you. Business planning isn’t nearly as fun as helping clients, but it’s required if you're looking to create financial freedom for yourself. AND... it really doesn’t have to be so hard. Business planning “feels” overwhelming for a couple of reasons typically…
So, let's fix all that and get you on your merry way! Tip 1: Learn and Use a Repeatable Process for Planning
A strong business planning process includes time for reflection, goal setting, and breaking those goals down into actionable steps. First, spend time reflecting on what has worked for you this far, what hasn’t worked so well and the lessons learned. What client getting acitivites were successfully and why? Which totally bombed and why? Then, determine your goals for the next 90 days.
Once you are super clear about what you want, it’s time to break that goal down into actionable steps that you can take each and every day. Now listen up! You need to engage in activities that are a match for your specific target market and that have an evidence base to support them. For example: If your clientele consists of executive leaders, don’t spend all of your time posting to social media hoping it will bring you clients. Executives need a personal experience of a coach or consultant before they will hire. In this case, spend your time booking an in-person speaking gig. If your clientele consists of busy single moms, don’t spend your time creating a day-long workshop. Busy moms struggle to get even 30 minutes to themselves, let alone a whole day. This audience would be better served by a presentation or video training that they can watch online when it is convenient to do so. I like to call this target market-method match. Once you’ve got your goal, and you’ve thought about your method, work backwards to break it down into teeny tiny steps that will slowly, but surely get you where you want to go. Most importantly, learn a process that works for you, and stick with it! The brain likes familiarity and when we practice doing the same thing over and over we get better and faster. Familiarly decreases stress, and builds confidence too. So, learn a process and repeat the process every 90 days. Tip 2: Create and Maintain Strong Weekly Plans Business planning is a habit, not a one-time event. Once you’ve created a 90-day goal and action steps, you must plan each week. I personally have chosen Sunday evenings for my weekly planning time, but you could choose Friday afternoons, or Saturdays if that works better for you. Just pick one time for weekly planning and stick with it! Building this as a habit is important to do. During that weekly planning time do the following:
This level of intentionally and continuously going back to your 90-day goal is critical if you want to build a business with a consistent stream of clients. By Saturday afternoon I start looking forward to Sunday planning. It's a super special time of the week that I've really come to enjoy. Tip 3: Create and Maintain Strong Daily Routines You’re really rolling! You’ve got your plan, and you’re setting up your weeks with intention. Yeah, you! Now it’s time to create a super impactful daily routine. This means that each morning you are looking at your plan and determining the most mission-critical action steps to take on that day. Everything else that is not aligned to your 90-day goal gets filled in around these mission-critical tasks. You prioritize the actions that really make a difference, and you ignore the distractions that do not bring you clients. In the the evening, you reflect on the day. You celebrate your wins for the day, and you reflect on your opportunities for growth. Yes, there is always something to celebrate and always a new way for us to grow. Setting up each and every day with intention is how we FOCUS our time on high leverage activities that bring the clients in. Not doing so makes us too susceptible to distraction. Once you make these planning routines habits, you will see that more often than not, you will actually surpass the goals you set! Your confidence will skyrocket as you start to believe that yes, you are great at business strategy and yes, you can set goals and create a plan with ease. You will feel unstoppable because no matter what you need to get done, you’ll have a process and the habits necessary to ensure you are successful.
